The official remake of the Korean film ‘Montage’, Te3n is an Amitabh Bachchan, Nawazuddin `Siddiqui and Vidya Balan starrer film, belonging to the thriller genre. The plot initiates with the recurring visits of John Roy (Amitabh Bachchan) at the police station to meet Inspector Sarita Sarkar (Vidya Balan), to talk about the 8 year old case of his granddaughter Angela Roy who was abducted cryptically and yet, despite a huge span of two years shorter than a decade, the face of the killer remained a mystery to all. The movie accelerates the moment a similar case is put forth for Sarita Sarkar (Vidya) to take its charge wherein another child is abducted, but surprisingly with an exact similar modus operandi as was with Angela. Inspector-turned priest, Father Martin (Nawazuddin Siddqui), who was earlier the in-charge of Angela’s case is convinced by Inspector Sarita for his assistance as she had encountered what was its facsimile.
While the story rather begins at a much intriguing, conceptual and mystifying note, it continues until it reaches the interval wherein, the much obvious suspect as preempted and perceived by the viewers from the voice of the kidnapper over the phone call is unraveled. While people are still hooked onto the seats, waiting for the much awaited climax, other than the mystery, it also unfolds the numerous loopholes in the plot. The climax misses on nothing, but the obvious, dismissing some unheeded details catering to the common sense of a layman. When everyone awaits something exclusively different from the predictable, unfortunately, nothing but what was foreseen by the viewers was delivered by the end of it all. It isn’t a thriller as great and nail-biting as expected from a Sujoy Ghosh produced, with actors as magnificent as Amitabh Bachchan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vidya Balan, but a reasonable one-time must watch for the cinephiles.
While the plot has a number of loopholes, yet is a one-time watch, the cast of the movie is splendid without a second thought. The legendary Amitabh Bachchan plays the role of John Roy who is grief stricken due to the abduction, followed by the death of his granddaughter, Angela Roy whom, despite great and incessant efforts, he could not save. For the great actor that he is, one doesn’t shy away from eulogizing his performance. Having said that, Nawazuddin Siddiqui doesn’t require us to speak much as his performance already speaks volumes for his skill at his craft. Apparently, Vidya Balan is said to have a cameo in the film, but plays one of the ‘Teen’ characters in the plot and has had a strong presence in the movie.
